*Community Cinema Night*
The premiere of the film ACTionism, directed by Michael Shaw, took place at the Better Business Summit in Manchester, an annual flagship conference organized by the Better Business Network at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School. This year’s summit theme was "Future Proof," posing the question, “What does your business need to truly be future proof?”
Two weeks after the premiere, the film ACTionism, which follows Ellie Meredith on her journey from being a passive consumer to an active citizen, garnered just under 40 requests for community screenings from various organizations. These requests came from the Green Party, Doughnut Labs, universities, schools, festivals, and Polmont Community Hub, as well as from locations including the US, New Zealand, Wales, Denmark, Ireland, the Alps, and many more.
The production team decided to kick off the community screenings on Thursday, January 30, in our PCHub's "Wee Hall," as it suited the film's vibe. We at PCHub were honored to act as the launch pad for the film's world tour. Following our launch in Polmont, Falkirk, Scotland, the film went on to have its third screening two days later in Sallanches, France. It then moved to Chamonix, where it was featured at Outer Range (a craft brewery) alongside a repair workshop. This marked the beginning of its global tour, and we now wonder where it is currently within the global share and repair network of communities.
We at PCH are also extremely proud to announce that the production crew chose our hub as the first venue to receive their handbook digitally! We printed page 16 for our Q&A session, which served as a guide for our host, Sustainable Braes, on how to facilitate social cinema nights. The team is still seeking funding and sponsors to make printed copies of the handbook available.
The producers' approach to community screenings aims to inspire, connect, and seed collective action. Unfortunately, advertising by marketers has given activism a negative connotation; it is essential for everyone to understand that even a simple litter pick is an important form of global environmental activism. The handbook is a 60-page magazine filled with stories, ideas, participation methods, and resources to connect communities.
